Mike Keating docked his Spirit of Adventure at H&M Landing October 19 after an eight-day trip to southern waters on the Bob Bell Charter. Bob's son David Bell won first place on the trip with 22 anglers, and Bob won second. All the jackpot wins were for wahoo.
David Bell's first-place skinny weighed 51.7 pounds on the certified scales. He said it bit a Salas 6X Jr. jig in purple and white. Bell, from Phelan, used 30-pound Berkeley Vanish fluorocarbon as his main line on an Avet 6-3 reel and an American Tackle 700 L rod.
Bob Bell's wahoo weighed 47 pounds. Bob is from Corona. Larry Rosebaum of Riverside won third place, for 34.2-pound wahoo.
Skipper Keating said 25-knot winds made The Ridge mostly unfishable, and that his group had done well on Cedros Island yellowtail. He added that six boats anchored and fishing at Alijos Rocks dampened his enthusiasm for venturing out to fish there.
